BSN* temporarily offline, server switch under way

As you noticed, BSN* temporarily went offline on May 19th, 2009 at 07:15AM PST. Unfortunately, the hosting service we used so far [IXhosting/eCommerce and their dedicated server business WebHosting.biz] unilaterally shut down our server due to host link overload. Given that we announced the server switch to the current hosting provider, we view their one-sided act as a hostile behavior towards our business. This was done with no previous warning and I’ll leave that matter to the business and legal services that we deployed to protect ourselves.

We’re now moving Bright Side of News* to a company that offered us service and comes with a credible background, with multiple 100, 10 and 1Gbps links and is the host to large ISPs and .com domains on the West Coast. Given the time needed for the DNS address change, we probably won’t be available until the weekend. We apologize for any inconvenience caused by this unprofessional behavior, but we are powerless to change the service sooner.

If you are planning on starting a new business, be vary of webhosting services out there in order to avoid becoming a victim of your own success. BSN* became a 3mth average Top 200K site on Alexa.com in 55 days and reached Top 50,000 sites on Quantcast. Our former hosting service did not liked that and probably prefers to use 300-visitor-a-day blog owners in their success stories instead of serious business such as ours.

The announcement given on the old BSN* still stands – we are going to bring version v1.0 next week, featuring HD galleries and more importantly, HD videos. With a stable and professional service at our new provider, we believe that the availability issues will be the thing of the past. Thank you for your patience.

  1. Did they take your domain too??

    http://chipicao.fileave.com/BSN.PNG

  2. Nope, they didn’t… we are changing the DNS servers right now…

And given the way they acted, I wonder how will BBB, USJU and IFJ react.

  3. You should definitely report them. Placing those links on your domain is NOT ok. It’s like an identity theft…

  4. Theo!!!!
You needed two (2) days to tell us what happened to your website.
Don’t try to evade by stating that you slept away yesterday’s day after making phone conversations with Asia at two a.m. (G300).

  5. What is that 3rd party content doing under your web adress??
I would sue them for damages, difamation, author copy right infraction; not to mention that they did not post any explanation what happened!

  6. Hi guys,

Given the nature of their behavior, and the “tiny” fact that this was a federal matter [involving a company from CA and a company from KY]… we have decided to involve appropriate federal authorities and state authorities.

BBB, USJU, FTC and CPA, FBI and KY Police are all being informed.

What they did is a criminal act of identity theft, equal to hacking under DCMA – and they will pay for it.

But know one thing – we are nowhere near being done with them. We’re now focused on bringing the site back online.

  7. We are all praying for deliverance.
Jokes or no jokes aside; when I saw that content I assumed that you got in some deep financial problems. (i did not know how to explain a turn from a highly pleasurable tech site, and extra informed one, to a net-customer-raping content).

  8. Hi Antares,

BSN* is just one part of a company consisted out of journalist teams, video production and web development studios.

Both video production and web development departments are profitable, and this is what carries BSN* on the safe side. Trust me, I feel very disappointed at this business relationship, since we paid for hosting two years in advance and we were promised roses.

With this switch, we consider our beta phase over. V1.0 will being out HD Videos and Galleries, and we plan a lot of surprises for you, our readers – in the near future.

In fact, here’s a teaser for you. Two Letters. One is a number four, one is a letter K. For download. Get it? ;)

Thanks for your patience guys, this surely means alot. But no, we are not going anywhere – as far as the team go… content is just being uploaded to a company that hosts sony.com and Valve Steam service. We have a dedicated 100Mbps link and a quad-core server… with SSD drive. So we should be good in terms of speed after DNS refresh finishes.

  9. I was just mulling over thoughts if Al-quaida (or somehing the like) accepts servicing orders for “dedicated” hosting services.

Well, I think I’ll remain glued till new you new launch.
(I would be in pain to miss the saga regarding TSMC and the new 40nm performance Ati/nvidia graphic; especially since I plan to stick them in my new system-together with a SSD).

  10. ;) Well, we have a lot of articles in relation to G300 cards, the reasons behind the delay of RV870 and the manufacturers of 32 and 28nm chips… all in all, you won’t miss a thing.

True, I will admit that I have not expect this situation, but the number of unreleased articles is growing and it will be fun once the DNS address change completes. You know how it goes, 24-48 hour mandatory wait [oh brother...].

Things are progressing, just the bad part is that we’re not online – this will be transparent in the future, promise ;)

  11. that was out of order – the only justifiable action for high traffic from them could have been a blanc page with a: sorry this host has reached its maximum allowance etc. But to try to display some stupid adverts as they did, it is more like identity interferiance and brand damage. sue the bastards!

    • “the only justifiable action – sorry this host has reached its maximum allowance ”

Hardly just; especially if they pocketed only 1 month ago MONEY FOR THE NEXT TWO YEARS.
The only thing them to do was giving a few months advance expire notice.

      Sueing for brand damage; well…
The old President had one positive and very effective side; if he was still in office we could make a petition accusing the hosting service of terorist action… that would be really effective; a nice Guantanamo for the next 10 years without trial.
It is adorably by the sea and it does not have an internet connection for making damages to others.

  12. These 24-48 hours are meant for potential domain name disputes; in certain cases it can be avoided; I think this is just the case, since you are suffering damage with passing of each hour.
I hope that you send a letter of “cease and desist” to the mentioned provider with the explicit request of posting information and removinf third party content.
considering their behaviour it is to wonder, if they are not going to dispute the DNS adress.

You are adding to the drama; I’m already on high octane due to this fort and back with the graphic cards; I think just anyone knows how it is if you wish to put together a new PC and the key components are missing (with the current ones terribly out of date). So, please, be gentle; you don’t want me on oxygen with a nurse nearby. (don’t dare to think about Las Vegas!)

  13. 4K download… Jesus Christ! I can’t wait.
    Go go BSN! :)

  14. Guys,

thanks for all the support…. we have completed the part on our side, and you should see BSN* back between 1 and 48h, depending on the speed of DNS change…

    Theo

  15. cool, whats the new IP address?
I will use the old trusted hosts file hack to see it and report if any problems

  16. We’re now quad-core powered and have uncapped 100Mbps speed – that should do for the site accesibility ;)

Now, if we only get those ads soon – we’ll put a 4K as a feature on our site… I don’t f’in care… you guys deserve the best. Hopefully, BSN* is the media that will deliver that “best”.

  17. I was just reading your resume; we have something in common! One of the five languages that I speak is Croatian!
The world is such a small place…

That hosting service is enlarging the offering under your website adress; are they opening a catering sevice or what??

  18. You speak Croatian? Cool – stvarno je svijet mali… ;)

I only speak three languages – English, Croatian and German – but here’s a tip. If you understand and speak Croatian, you can multiple the number of languages that you speak – since Croatian is very similar to Bosnian, Serbian – buy one, get two free ;)

I don’t mind what the host is doing… since every change is a screenshot that will be used during prosecution. DNS server change request sent… we will probably be online tomorrow morning CET.

  19. I have few doubts about that making three from one. Croatian has that j (ijekavstina), serbian is ekavstina. Pavlaka, vrhnje or smetana are completely different words for cream. How is with Bosnian I have no idea; even Croatian has become complicated enough; I was told that they don’t force anymore the official language taken from Hercegovina and that they can now use their own language-I wonder how a Dalmatian communicates with a Slavonian or a Medimurcem.
I hope you are going to cover Computex and SSD market since this year is a Babilonian mess.

  20. Yo I just discovered this website a few days ago then it went down and I was like WTF all the old good hardware sites went soft now I need my BSN!

  21. Hi Jet – DNS server change in process, should be done soon.

We plan to be back online today, May 21st.

  22. We’re back as of May 21st 3:17AM GMT.

    Thanks for your support.

  23. You are not back; at 9Cet in the morning the adress still opens the old hosting which has in the meantime made a real joke of you; under title “Bright side of news, all you need and when you need” it is, I think, now even possible to order a ship ticket to Cayman.

  24. Can you send me a screenshot? Use theo.valich@gmail.com e-mail address…

Since we’re uploading news and “business is normal” to myself and our guys in the US.

  25. Pinging http://www.brightsideofnews.com leads to our new address, but the DNS data still isn’t refreshed. Odd.

  26. I’m following from a mobile (I am not even near a PC for a screen shot). Anyway, you are not online as far as www goes.

  27. Vodafone Blackberry – works. My PC [T-Com ISP] – works. But yeah, it still takes some time for ISPs to refresh servers…

  28. Half europe is still cut off. (how is with the rest?)

  29. BSN is again online; last article is about 975 overclocking. The site is slow in the extreme.

  30. Great Stuff..
    Keep Your Good Work Going..
    Regards!
    Boblee

  31. Hello would you mind sharing which blog platform you’re using? I’m going to start my own blog in the near future but I’m having a difficult time deciding between BlogEngine/Wordpress/B2evolution and Drupal. The reason I ask is because your design and style seems different then most blogs and I’m looking for something unique.

P.S Sorry for getting off-topic but I had to ask!
